America from the Great Depression to World War II - The Library of Congress has gone online with over 55,000 black-and-white and 1,600 color photographs from the Farm Security Administration collection.  A fascinating site with some of the earliest and best work of world-renowned artists. Well-written text. Searchable and browsable.

American Colonial Life (Williamsburg)

Ancient & Classical Cultures - Multnomah County Library, Oregon offers an extensive list of websites about ancient cultures around the world.

Dead People Server - The Dead People Server is simply a list of interesting celebrities who are, or might plausibly be dead.  Accuracy not guaranteed. Lots of links and very entertaining.

Find a Grave - How to find where everybody who was anybody is buried.

History Detectives - PBS companion site to the popular television program. You can learn to do your own historical research on family history, antiques and historical documents.

History Web Resources - Recommended history sites from the University of Virginia.

HistoryNet - Provides an extensive list of events not limited to American history.

HyperHistory Online - View timelines based on people or events for the last 3,000 years.

Internet Modern History Sourcebook - Maintained by Paul Halsall of Fordham University, this site gives a time line of modern history and links to sites that specialize in covering specific periods and elements from those periods.

Lists of U.S. Presidents - This is a list of all the information (embarrassing and otherwise) that anyone could possibly want concerning our presidents.  Listings are by birthdate, age when their fathers died, which were masons, reputed affairs, college, age at marriage, number of children, election information, Nobel Prize winners.

Presidents of the United States (POTUS) - Background information, election results, cabinet members, notable events, and lots of useful links about all of the presidents.  This site is great for homework.

Time Capsule - Enter your birthday or other date to find out the major events for that time, what music was popular, how much a car or a house cost, etc.

Today in History - Illustrates a daily event from U.S. history with an image from the Library of Congress's collection.

U.S. Army Center of Military History – This is one of the largest libraries of military history information on the web. CMH Online offers access to books, articles and artwork.

BRL: Braille through Remote Learning - an online instructional program that provides teachers, parents, social workers, and current/future braille transcribers with a series of three integrated online courses in braille and braille transcribing.

Language Course Finder - "With over 10,000 language schools teaching 88 languages in 115 countries, [this] is the largest online directory of language courses and language schools world wide." A collaboration of ICWE, ICEF and ICF AG, leaders in language education and workshops since 1985, this site offers searches in many languages for additional languages to learn, school information, distance learning course information and much more.

Language Learning Library - A FREE comprehensive guide to learning foreign languages: Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. This site was designed for students and teachers.

Mythology

Classics Unveiled - A Canadian site featuring Mythnet (where togas are still hip),
Rome Unleashed, Rome Exposed and Latin Wordstock.

GodChecker.com - Lists all gods from all pantheons (even literary, so Tolkien fans rejoice).

Encyclopedia Mythica - This is an encyclopedia of mythology, folklore, legends, and more.  It contains over 5,100 definitions of gods and goddesses, supernatural beings and legendary creatures and monsters from all over the world.  The genealogy section is particularly well done .

Religion

Bible Gateway - Search for a word or phrase in seven versions and ten languages.

Crosswalk - "Where faith & values meet everyday life." Sections on men, women, spiritual life, money, movie guide etc. Christian chat, music. You can download a free Web filter to "protect your family from harmful content."

Buddhanet - This site is a non-profit Buddhist information network sponsored by Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery in Singapore and Connect Infobahn Australia.  It provides links to the top Buddhist Websites, pages on meditation, seminars and workshops, a library of Buddhist texts, and clip art.

Encyclopedia of Christianity - This is intended to provide one-stop access to a number of dictionaries and encyclopedias of Christianity, and other topical references. Christian Classics Ethereal Library at Calvin College has cross linked Easton's Bible Dictionary, Torrey's Topical Textbook, Dictionary of Christian Theology and the Catholic Encyclopedia.

Hindunet - This site includes arts, customs, temples and organizations.  It has excellent links to languages and Interfaith Relations (comparative religions).  It offers free "Hindu mail", and one of its departments is called "God, Sages and Gurus."  It has an exceptional link to Religious and Sacred Texts which lists full texts of everything from the Egyptian Book of the Dead to the Mormon texts.

Interfaith Calendar - This nonprofit website offers calendars featuring the religious holidays of all major religions and quite a few lesser known ones. It also links to a religion news page and cultural calendars for America, Mexico, Britain, India, Canada, China and Egypt.

Islamicity - Sponsored by Hadi, Inc., this site features Qur'an search and Hadith search and links to many devotional sites .  It broadcasts prayers from Mecca via Webcam five times a day and offers translation services through its link to Babelfish Tool page.

Jewish Family & Life - Hosted by Shamash: the Jewish Internet Consortium, this site has articles on everything from diet to music--all with a family theme. 

Project Genesis - Touted as the best site for serious Jewish education on the Internet, the founders bill themselves as "your Cyberspace Center for Jewish philosophy, Kabbalah, ethics and law."  The site also acknowledges the "jewishly curious" and offers Torah on the Information Superhighway, and free Torahmail.
