Florida Gen Web Project - In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Florida Comprehensive Genealogy Database. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Florida, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index. The USGenWeb Project and FLGenWeb Project are a non-commercial, all-volunteer organization.

Genealogy.com - One of several major surname search sites. Provide both free and for-a-fee searches. Often they will have a “monthly special” which allows you to search one of their normally fee-based databases free of charge. Also has a collection of surname bulletin boards. Genealogists post messages and hope for response.

Making of America - Cornell University has scanned the massive War of the Rebellion volumes. There is an index scanned in as well. In the Index, the Roman number corresponds to the Series number and the Arabic number corresponds to the volume. When looking for pages, the number you type in is the image number, which won't be the actual page number. Once you find the Series and Volume numbers, don't be surprised to find a volume has several books. Each of those has an individual index as well, which leads to the exact page number.

Rootsweb - Home of an enormous amount of genealogical information. Many of the surname mailing lists call Rootsweb home. Rootsweb also has searching capabilities for its mailing lists and lots of other information. Some census information, also.

RootsWeb Surnames - List Find names and addresses (often email addresses, too) of other people who are researching the name you're interested in.

USGenWeb - The place to start for genealogical information by state.

And don't forget--if your search for an answer didn't prove successful, contact the Reference Desk at your nearest Brevard County Public Library.
