Confused? Our Computer Services Department can help, check out How to Search the Internet for search tips. Two more good sources to help you are Finding Information on the Internet and Search Engines tells you how to get the most out of these essential sites. Much shorter is the Internet Public Library's Web Searching, which briefly describes eight or so of the most common engines and lists their strengths and weaknesses. A major site with extensive information on how to use search engines is Search Engine Watch.

Web Search Engines

AllSearchEngines - A very handy site—lists ‘em all. This site gives you the major search engines, like AltaVista, HotBot, NorthernLight, etc., plus the specific engines for Career & Jobs, Entertainment, News & Weather, and areas you’ve never given any thought to.   The How to Search , Search Tools and Tools Chart pages are cool, and the Domain Post page is a true revelation.  Wanna buy a domain?

Ask an Expert - Connects you to sites where you can get a question answered by an expert in the subject. Ask an Amish expert, ask a volcanologist, ask a space scientist, ask a hurricane hunter, and thousands more.

Ask - Formally known as Ask Jeeves, Ask.com is a search engine that tries to improve your search by suggesting terminology that will expand or narrow your topic.

Google Groups- Search the more than 25,000 Internet newsgroups for information on almost any imaginable subject.

Excite - Searches keywords of 60 million web pages including most archived mailing lists. Includes brief annotations, unlike Yahoo.

Google - Most widely used search engine based on simplicity of use and quality of results.

HotBot - Search the full text of 110 million web pages.  Easy to use a la Yahoo, lots of stuff a la Alta Vista.

Go.com - Formerly known as Infoseek, Go.com offers news and Web portal services in addition to a Yahoo-powered search engine.

Knowledge Hound - Specializes in finding how-to information, from the everyday (how to make a paper airplane, how to spot a fake antique) to the uncommon (how to make bagpipes, how to make a digital clock).

Librarians’ Index to the Internet - More than 5000 resources useful to public library users, evaluated and annotated by librarians.

Lycos - Indexes the full text of 50 million web pages.  Powerful engine with something for everyone, if a little clumsy.

Metacrawler - A search engine that searches other search engines. Using it is like submitting your query to many search engines simultaneously.

Yahoo! - Yahoo offers access to over 500,000 web pages.  Yahooligans is a search engine specifically designed for kids.  Hourly news.  Easy to use.

If you need to search for images, use Ditto.com or the Google Image Search.

Didn't find what you need? Don't forget the resources available at the 17 Brevard County Libraries: roughly one million books, magazines, databases, audio books, videos and CD's, along with reference librarians to guide you in your search. You can search our holdings (and reserve books, etc.) on GeoWeb.
