Public Library's Web
Searching, which briefly describes eight or so of
the most common engines and lists their strengths and
weaknesses. A major site with extensive information
on how to use search engines is Search
Engine Watch.
Web Search Engines
AllSearchEngines -
A very handy site—lists ‘em all. This site gives you
the major search engines, like AltaVista, HotBot,
NorthernLight, etc., plus the specific engines for
Career & Jobs, Entertainment, News & Weather,
and areas you’ve never given any thought to.
The How to Search , Search Tools and Tools Chart pages
are cool, and the Domain Post page is a true revelation.

Ask
an Expert - Connects you to sites where you can
get a question answered by an expert in the subject.
Ask an Amish expert, ask a volcanologist, ask a space
scientist, ask a hurricane hunter, and thousands more.
Ask - Formally
known as Ask Jeeves, Ask.com is a search engine that
tries to improve your search by suggesting terminology
that will expand or narrow your topic.
Google Groups-
Search the more than 25,000 Internet newsgroups
for information on almost any imaginable subject.
Excite
- Searches keywords of 60 million web pages including
most archived mailing lists. Includes brief annotations,
unlike Yahoo.
Google
- Most widely used search engine based on simplicity
of use and quality of results.
HotBot - Search
the full text of 110 million web pages. Easy
to use a la Yahoo, lots of stuff a la Alta Vista.
Go.com - Formerly
known as Infoseek, Go.com offers news and Web portal
services in addition to a Yahoo-powered search engine.
Knowledge
Hound - Specializes in finding how-to information,
from the everyday (how to make a paper airplane, how
to spot a fake antique) to the uncommon (how to make
bagpipes, how to make a digital clock).
Librarians’ Index to
the Internet - More than 5000 resources useful
to public library users, evaluated and annotated by
librarians.
Lycos
- Indexes the full text of 50 million web pages.
Powerful engine with something for everyone, if a
little clumsy.
Metacrawler
- A search engine that searches other search engines.
Using it is like submitting your query to many search
engines simultaneously.
Yahoo!
- Yahoo offers access to over 500,000 web pages.
Yahooligans is a search engine specifically designed
for kids. Hourly news. Easy to use.
If you need to search for images, use Ditto.com
or the Google
Image Search.
