Minutes
Satellite Beach Library Board
March 11, 2008
The meeting was called to order by Lore Scurrah.
Attending were: Carol Late, Hope Ascher, Bonnie Chatterton,
Barbara Stasko, Lore Scurrah, Sarah Wilkins, Lucia
Watson, Michael Zangari, Nancy Grout, and Diane Sheffield.
Minutes of January meeting were approved.
Director's Report: Nancy reported that the
library is fully staffed at this time. The parking
lot is being repaired and new car stops installed.
All out of county travel is frozen due to budget changes.
Beginning in April, credit and debit cards will be
accepted for fines. The minimum amount is $1.00. The
Central Brevard Library has experimented with using
cards and report that fine collection increased. December
and January statistics were presented and discussed.
Chairperson Report: Lore reported that new
officers needed to be elected for 2008 as there was
no election in January. This was done at the end of
the meeting. There was a request to re-visit goals
at the May meeting.
Friends Report: The annual book sale was very
successful and the proceeds were $8,333.90. Carol
reported the contribution of the Boy Scouts and the
Brevard Parks and Recreation Department to the success
of the sale.
Unfinished Business: The Brevard Reading Festival
was held March 1. Satellite Beach Library supported
the Teen Crafts area. There was good support from
Brevard Public Schools in attending the reading and
author signings. Budget constraints will limit or
cancel the festival in the future.
Nancy, with Marie Whiting of the Friends of the Library,
and other library representatives visited Tallahassee
during Library Days. They met with several representatives
to deliver handouts and information on the importance
of libraries.
New Business: Budget cuts next year will eliminate
the publication of the Bookmark. These events are
on-line. Michael offered to submit articles for Senior
Life to advertise library activities. The 50% media
budget cuts are already planned and library subscriptions
to paid databases, including the popular ancestry
site, will end.
Hope suggested publicizing a "wish list"
of library needs so people wishing to donate gifts
to the library would have an idea of needed materials.
Ideas for publicizing library activities included
using the Beachcaster, Orbiter, and other local community
papers.
Other Business: Elections were held. Hope Ascher
will serve as Chairperson, Barbara Stasko as vice-chairperson
and Diane Sheffield as secretary.
Meeting was adjourned at 7:55.
Respectfully submitted,
Diane Sheffield secretary
