BOARD MEETING
Eau Gallie Public Library
September 18, 2007
The regular meeting of the Melbourne Library Board
was held this date and called to order at 3:00 p.m.
by Chairman Charlotte Friedland. The following members

2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Moved by Sullivan/Urquhart that the minutes of
the August 21, 2007 Board meeting be approved as submitted.
MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY.
3. CORRESPONDENCE
A thank you note was received from Mr. & Mrs.
McCrea for the luncheon.
Mrs. Friedland reported that she received a letter
from the City of Melbourne regarding
Board training to be held at the Front Street Civic
Center on September 27, 2007.
Mrs. Friedland said that The Friends, Foundations,
and Boards Workshop will be held in Vero Beach on
November 8, 2007, with lunch provided. Mrs. Prieth
will ask the Friends of the Melbourne Library to cover
the cost.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
4. OLDE EAU GALLIE RIVERFRONT COMMUNITY REDEVELOPMENT
Mrs. Dwyer said that the CRA Committee held a public
meeting to discuss the proposed Art District. The
meeting was on September 5 and there were 60 attendees.
Mrs. Dwyer reviewed the recommendations and the PowerPoint
presentation with the Library Board.
Mrs. Dwyer next reported on the September 13, 2007
meeting of the CRA Committee. The upcoming competition
for designing the new bike racks was discussed. The
CRA has donated $3,000.00 for Christmas decorations
to the Eau Gallie Merchants Association. Traffic calming
on Pineapple Avenue and street scaping were also discussed.
There will be a meeting of the Waterfronts Florida
Project Managers this Thursday and Friday, September
20 and 21, at the Eau Gallie Public Library. There
will be a reception for the Project Managers on Thursday
at 1:00 p.m. on the Eau Gallie Pier.
5. BUDGET FY 2007-2008
Mrs. Dwyer stated that the final budget meeting is
being held tonight at 5:30 p.m. and will air on cable
channels 1 and 99. There is ongoing discussion about
collecting fees, including possible meeting room fees.
NEW BUSINESS
6. LIBRARY REPORTS
Eau Gallie Public Library
Mrs. Dwyer reported that circulation is up 7% from
the previous year. With checkouts and returns, Circulation
Staff is handling about 60,000 items per month. PC
usage was over 4,800. And there was a slight decrease
in attendance compared to this time last year. From
October 2006 to August 2007 some volunteers were omitted
from the monthly reports. The correction is shown
on the August 2007 report.
The Friends program on September 13 featuring Virginia
King entitled How to Write An Autobiography and
Family History was well attended. There was a
nice write-up in The Times about Mrs. King.
Dr. Sylvie Morin, Doctor of Oriental Medicine, will
be the speaker at the health program about arthritis
and alternative medicine on September 25 from 1:00
p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
The Friends Fall Book Sale will be held October 18
- 20, 2007.
The Holiday Craft programs begin on October 9 and
will continue through November 13. They will be held
on Tuesdays at 2:00 p.m.
There will be a Friends Book Program on October 10
at 2:00 p.m. River Villa will be discussed
by the author, Lura Zerick. Another Friends program
will be on October 31. It will be about the 75th Volunteer
Infantry Regiment in the Civil War.
The City's recreational activities booklet, that
was included in Florida Today, has the new
Eau Gallie Pier on the cover. The Library is included
in the photograph.
Mrs. Dwyer explained that all Brevard County Libraries
will be closed on Monday, October 8 and all library
employees will be attending a staff development day.
Discussion followed.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Public Library
Mrs. Lanoue, in Mrs. Edwards absence, reported that
the August attendance was up 14% from the previous
year and circulation increased 65%. The PC usage has
been very busy. The Youth and Adult program attendance
totaled 190.
The Youth Services Librarian is going to be on medical
leave for an expected 4 - 6 weeks.
The recent front doors repair costs totaled $1,310.00
Melbourne Public Library
Mrs. Dwyer gave the Melbourne Library report as Mrs.
Prieth is on Annual Leave and will return October
1, 2007.
Monthly statistics include checkouts that were up
15%, attendance was up 26% over this time last year,
and PC usage remains high.
The Friends Book Sale will be October 4 and flyers
were distributed to the Board.
All three Library page positions are vacant at this
time. The possibility of using volunteers to fill
these positions was discussed.
Mrs. Dwyer reported that there is a hiring freeze
in effect with the County.
7. OTHER
Project Vote Smart's motor coach will be visiting
various libraries and will present a voter "self-defense"
program on October 10 at the Melbourne Public Library.
Discussion followed.
A very complimentary letter from a citizen was received
regarding our Mobile Library.
Mrs. Dillen's art was featured in a ten-page article
in the September/October issue of Spaces - Space
Coast Style & Design magazine published by
Florida Today.
8. ANNOUNCEMENTS
a. The next meeting of the Melbourne Library Board
is scheduled for Tuesday, October 16, 2007 at 3:00
p.m., at the Melbourne Public Library.
b. The next meeting of the County Library Board is
scheduled for Wednesday, September 19, 2007, at 5:00
p.m., at the Central Brevard Library and Reference
Center.
9. ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business, the meeting was
adjourned at 3:55p.m.
