How long does it take?

We try to answer your email query within 24 to 48 hours. However, sometimes we take longer due to circumstances beyond our control.

What kind of questions can you answer?

We can only provide answers to questions which have a documented factual anwer. We cannot help with hypothetical questions or cases which require original research or analysis of information.


How much help can you give me?

Please remember that reference librarians refer. We will do our best to handle questions requiring a short, factual answer. In other cases requiring more research, we will point you toward the sources our experience indicates are the most likely to be of benefit to you.

Can you help with my project/assignment/homework?

We will gladly point you to information on your topic. The responsibility of interpreting the resources and fulfilling your assignment, of course, is up to you.

What kind of background information do you need?

Please provide us with as much information about your question as possible. The more you tell us, the more likely we will be able to find the answer you're seeking. Informing us of the context of your question, sources you've already checked, and similar facts will be very useful.

Our only way to contact you is via your email address. Please double-check to make sure you are giving your correct address. A second problem may occur if your e-mail is part of a local network or behind a firewall.

Family History and Obituary Questions:

We can advise you how to get started tracing your family history and provide relevant genealogical contact information. Be sure to check the Genealogy section of our Websites by Subject page.

For obituary research, the first place to check is our Obituary Database, which is accessible from any of our 18 locations. This type of question can sometimes require extended investigation, which is beyond the scope of our reference service, but we will be happy to advise you on some likely sources.
