The Brevard County Libraries Literacy Program provides Volunteer Literacy Tutors to non-reading adult residents of Brevard County including those for whom English is a second language. There is no cost to Tutors or Students.

Training is provided for Tutors, and Basic Literacy Tutor Training Workshops are given on a regular basis.

After training, Tutors may commit as little as two hours per week to tutoring. Tutoring sessions occur at times and places (typically one of the 18 public libraries) which are convenient to both Tutors and Students.

Family Literacy

In 2000, the Literacy Program received grant funding to add a Family Literacy component to its program. Family Literacy focuses on improving the literacy skills of parents, while also showing them how to use those skills in reading to their children.

The primary purpose of Family Literacy is to break the intergenerational cycle of under education and poverty by improving parents’ basic skills and attitudes toward education, their parenting skills, their children’s pre-literacy and school readiness skills, and the overall quality of parent-child relationship.

For more information about current Family Literacy activities or to volunteer to assist with Family Literacy activities, please contact the Literacy Office at 635-7949.
