CALL TO ORDER
The Brevard County Library Board meeting was
called to order on March 19, 2008, at 5:00 p.m. at
the Melbourne Library by Chairman Pat Freeman.
Pledge of Allegiance
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mr. Shenton, Melbourne
Library Friends president.
Approval of Minutes
Ms. Freeman asked for any additions or corrections
to the minutes of the January 16, 2008 regular meeting.
Minutes approved as presented.
Correspondence
None
Director's Report
- Reading Festival was held March 1, 2008 at Riverfront
Park in Cocoa, the event was very well attended,
events and programs were reviewed.
- Due to Budget cuts, the Library Foundation has
committed to funding next year's Reading Festival.
- Approval was received 3/18/08 from the Board of
County Commissioners' for a Request for Proposal
(RFP) to bid for a coffee service at the Franklin
T DeGroodt Library.
- Hiring freeze - prior to hiring freeze for outside
hiring taking affect, we were able to replace the
Accounting Technician, Clive "Jimmy" McCalla
has been hired, and Anthony Mitchum, formerly from
Parks & Recreation, hired as General Repair
Technician. Mr. Mitchum will begin April 7, 2008.
- Debit/Credit card machine use will begin April
1, 2008 in all libraries. Money collected will go
into each Library's Fines & Fees accounts.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Foundation Report
The Library Foundation is currently conducting
a membership drive, seeking donations to pay for the
gas for the Mobile Library, books for the libraries,
and the Reading Festival.
Budget
The Preliminary budget is due April 14 to the County
Manager. General reductions/cuts were reviewed with
the Board.
Library Day Report
Changing Library Day in Tallahassee to before the
legislative session was a great idea. The group was
able to have better meetings with the legislators
regarding library issues.
NEW BUSINESS
Library Director Reports
Mrs. Jeri Prieth, Melbourne Library Director, introduced
Melbourne Library Advisory Board member and all library
staff present. Past, current and upcoming events,
projects, programs, and Statistical information was
reviewed. Melbourne Library staff presented Board
members with "Making a Difference" pins.
Ms. Lisa Olzewski, Mims/Scottmoor Library Director,
discussed staff ideas outlined at the Staff Development
Day. Events, programs, and statistical data were reviewed.
Ms. Estella Edwards, Dr. Martin L. King Jr. Library
Director, outlined statistical data, programs and
events and renovations at the library.
COUNTY LIBRARY BOARD MEMBERS COMMENTS
Mrs. Craig has books/tapes on Vitamin C & Lysine
available.
Mr. Scott was very impressed with the presentation.
He felt it is very important to get the word out to
the public that the libraries are worth having. The
other board members agreed with his comments.
Ms. Freeman stated that all the presentations were
wonderful, and expressed her willingness to support
the Libraries. Libraries are part of our heritage.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
The next meeting of the County Library Advisory Board
will be April 16, 2008, at the Port St. John Public
Library at 5:00 p.m.
