Mission Statement
Brevard County Libraries enables people of all ages
to improve their quality of life by providing information
and enrichment through traditional resources and new
technology.
Vision Statement
We will be recognized as a Library System that excels
in providing efficient, modern, accessible and customer
oriented services.
System Description
There are presently over 900,000 volumes total in
the Brevard County Libraries. One library card is
valid at all locations, and materials are loaned between
locations through a daily courier service and outside
our libraries via Inter-Library Loan. Periodical subscriptions
stand at about 2,250. The libraries own over 18,000
videos and 21,000 sound recordings.
The Central Brevard Library and Reference Center
is a State and Federal Documents Depository. Located
at the Central, Melbourne and North Brevard libraries
are fairly extensive collections of genealogical materials.
An Audio-Visual Library of 16mm films and videos which
can be reserved and scheduled in advance (all with
public performance rights) is located at the Central
Brevard Library and Reference Center.
Located in each library are special collections for
the physically and visually handicapped residents
in our County. These include a circulating collection
of Assistive Reading devices, a collection of adult
reads (low reading level materials) to assist new
readers, and TDD's. Assistive listening devices and
large print terminals are also available.
Community Description
The Brevard County Libraries is made up of seventeen
public libraries. Located on Florida's Space Coast,
Brevard County is unique geographically being 72 miles
long and 25 miles wide at the broadest point. Brevard's
geography coupled with limits of public transportation,
necessitates that services be provided in as many
locations as possible to serve the needs of the county
residents.
Brevard is home to the Kennedy Space Center and major
space-related industries and employs a highly technical
labor force. Brevard County exceeds Florida's averages
in the percent of residents with both high school
and college educations for adults over 25 years
There are eight colleges and universities as well
as one vocational technical college in Brevard.
In addition to the Brevard County Libraries, there
are many academic and special libraries which are
part of the Central
Florida Library Cooperative and offer expanded
services to the Brevard Community.
